The Cascades, Metcalfe

cascades on a sunny day

What: Just past Kyneton and Malmsbury is this magical place, The Cascades. The carpark is only metres from the site so it is easy for little legs to walk to. The sound of the water is incredible and you can get quite close to the rapids without getting wet. It’s the perfect place to get back to nature.

Where: If you are heading up the Calder Freeway, take the exit for Malmsbury, Taradale and Daylesford and turn right across the freeway. Turn left onto Malmsbury/Metcalfe Road and finally turn left onto Cascades Road and follow it until you arrive. Alternatively, you can type The Cascades into your GPS for directions.

The best bit: The kids loved jumping in the still water on the edge of The Cascades, throwing pebbles in and exploring as far as they could down along river’s edge, (it’s not that far). You may want to pop the kids in gumboots or shoes with a good grip.

Picnic or cafe: There are plenty of picnic tables or you could drive fifteen minutes back to Kyneton for some lunch. Try out our favourite kid friendly eateries, Ruby Cafe, Major Tom’s or Social Foundry.

Toilets: There are no toilets so have the kids go before you leave.

Make a day of it: If you want a big day out in the fresh air, head to nearby Turpin Falls or try out the Black Hill Reserve Ridge or Circuit Walk. You could time your visit with the Kyneton Farmers’ Market on the second Saturday of the month or incorporate a play at the brilliant Taradale Mineral Springs Nature Reserve Park or Kyneton Community Park.

Dogs: There are no signs saying dogs are not allowed so you should be fine with them on a leash.
