3 Little Pigs

What: If you have lived in Gisborne for a little while and you have kids, you will no doubt have visited 3 Little Pigs at some point. It is the epitome of a kid-friendly cafe with great food and coffee as well. No wonder it is award winning!

Where: 3 Little Pigs is in the service road on Aitken Street in Gisborne.

Rating on the kid friendly scale: There are few kid-friendly cafes that tick all the boxes but 3 Little Pigs is one of them. The cafe offers a wide variety of child-friendly meals and snacks and is equipped with several high chair and a nappy change table. It can be a squeeze with a pram at times, as it is so popular, but they are welcome in the cafe. The kid’s menus can be coloured in with pencils that are provided. There is also a brilliant Pig Pen in the corner of the cafe where children can play with toys, watch ABC4Kids on the television or write in chalk on the blackboard walls. As a mum whose first two children were hard to contain and keep occupied in cafes, I can personally attest to the effectiveness of the kids corner!

The best bit: 3 Little Pigs is truly a haven for families. The staff are warm and welcoming. I have never felt uncomfortable breastfeeding my babies, or worried if my child spills a drink or starts to have a meltdown. The staff are helpful and understanding.

You must try: The piggy cupcake is a staple for my littlest and my older two are hooked on the ham and cheese croissants. I love the bliss balls with my coffee or enjoy a quiche and salad if I’m having lunch. The hot chips are also delicious!

Make a day of it: If you are from out of town, why not come on the day of the Gisborne Olde Time and Oaks Markets? Pop up to the Gisborne Adventure Playground if the weather is nice and walk through the Gisborne Botanic Gardens. Riddells Creek is just ten minutes away if you feel like a peaceful walk on the Conglomerate Gully Walking Track to round out your day.
