What a strange Term Two we have had this year and after only three to five weeks back at school, depending on the grade your child is in, we have holidays again. With recent outbreaks of the coronavirus in Victoria, it makes it difficult to say for sure what will and won’t be open.
Here are ten ideas for the kids for at home and away. In case I cannot update this blog quickly enough, I recommend you always check the status of places via their website, Facebook page or over the phone before you head off. Happy holidays!
Goldfields Library Holiday programs: The Goldfields libraries have wonderful holiday programs online. You still need to book your spot. Head to the Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne and Romsey Libraries’ Facebook pages for all their up to date information.
Little Think Big craft boxes: Support a local business and buy a craft box to keep the kids occupied and creative on the holidays. The first lot of boxes have sold out but head to the Little Think Big website on 1 July to secure one in the next round.
Dromkeen: Dromkeen in Riddell Creek is a famous historic homestead with a gallery, tearoom and beautiful gardens. They are open for business but there is no storytime these holidays and they can only have a maximum of 20 people at at time. Be sure to book ahead if you would like to visit.
The Chocolate Mill, Daylesford: There’s nothing like a hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day. The Chocolate Mill are limited to how many people can be inside so ensure you book ahead, arrive early in the day, or rug up in case you have to wait outside. Make it part of a day out to Trentham or Daylesford.
Check out a local playground: Check out the local playgrounds in our shire and beyond. We have a list of our favourites for you to try.
Hanging Rock Llama Treks: These treks are so popular, the farm visits and 12 km treks are booked out for the holidays. There are still availabilities for the 5 km treks. Make a booking to secure your spot.
Visit a book store: Support our local book stores these holidays so you can curl up with the kids with a picture book or they can enjoy some quiet reading time themselves. Check out Squishy Minnie and Aesop’s Attic in Kyneton, New Leaves in Woodend, Red Door Books in Lancefield or Paradise Bookstore in Daylesford.
Have some fresh air fun: If it’s not rainy, get out in the fresh air and go for a walk or bike ride. We have a list of fresh air fun destinations as well as pram friendly walks listed for your information. Don’t forget to rug up and take some water and snacks with you if you are taking the kids on a longer walk.
Visit a market: Head to a local market as part of your family’s weekend day out. Have a read of our list of markets but don’t forget to check out their Facebook pages for current rules due to Covid-19.
Support a local cafe: Make a booking with a local cafe and have a special meal out. Support your local businesses during this tough time. Bring your own toys or notepads for the kids, as cafes can’t provide toys and books to share. We have a list of kid friendly cafes that we recommend you try.
